Working for Living, Summer 2024

Working for Living, Summer 2024

It’s been a great summer that comes to a close this week. GP has had a summer internship in another department where I work.

She’s had to learn some new skills–like staying awake for 8 hours straight. She also learned that she loves our cafeteria’s chocolate muffins, and she hates coding! Good thing for AI!

As a parent, I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to ride in to work together and walk together to our respective offices on campus. These moments are short, and she’ll likely forget them, but they have been wonderful for me.

A funny moment occurred when we picked up a pizza after work at Pizza Hut. This weekly stop is a Friday tradition I normally do on my way home. It’s been nice to have GP riding shotgun for the past few weeks on this little errand.

Well, she popped out of the car and ran in to grab our order, and a friend from my high school days was the manager and waited on her. He knows I come in most Fridays, and he saw the name on the order and saw the young lady picking up the pizza.

So he naturally inquired, “Are you married to, Dave?”

GP is 17. I am 55! Wholly smokes! How does GP reply?

She doesn’t. She casually grabs the pizza and saunters back out to the parking lot. Then, with a giggle relays the story to me.

“You corrected him, right?” I demanded.

“No, Dad. I thought it was funny.” GP responds with a smirk.

“What! Oh, dear heavens! He’s gonna think I’m a cradle robber!” I was aghast. “You should’ve said something.”

“Dad, I don’t know him. Who cares?” GP knocked that phrase down like it was a bit of corn stuck in her teeth.

Me? I was petrified! For the sake of the innocent, I won’t reveal who the manager was, but I’m completely embarrassed to visit that Pizza Hut location.

Kids?!? Ugh!

With that, summer is coming to an end, and her internship is coming to an end. So the embarrassing moments are ending, but so are the walks into work.
